The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has addressed the negative reaction towards US vice-president JD Vance during the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, emphasizing the importance of fair play and highlighting their positive relationship with the American government.
Vance, leading the US delegation, faced boos from the crowd as the US team entered the San Siro stadium in Italy, creating an awkward moment. When questioned about the incident, IOC spokesperson Mark Adams expressed satisfaction with the US administration’s involvement in the Games and the support shown to the American team.
Mark Adams stated, “The upcoming Games in Los Angeles have our full support with the active engagement of the US administration. It is beneficial for the Olympic movement to have such strong support. Witnessing the audience cheer for the US team was a fantastic display of fair play, which we greatly appreciate.”
Regarding the cheers for the US team, Adams mentioned, “As a sports organization, it is heartening to see such positive reception for the athletes. We always advocate for fair play at sporting events and value the relationship with the administration.”
Andrea Varnier, the chief executive of Milano-Cortina 2026, chose not to comment further on Italian sentiments towards the US government. Varnier remarked, “I personally witnessed an overwhelming applause for the US team’s arrival at the stadium. I did not notice any other reactions except what was reported in the media. The applause was truly remarkable.”
The IOC also emphasized the need for respectful behavior from spectators, particularly addressing the booing directed at Israeli athletes. Adams stressed the importance of supporting all athletes, regardless of their nationality or background, and promoting sportsman-like conduct at all times.
Vance arrived in Milan ahead of the Games, engaging with American athletes and attending the US women’s ice hockey match against Czechia. He also held discussions with IOC president Kirsty Coventry before the Opening Ceremony.
Providing details about the meeting, Adams shared, “The discussions between Vice President Vance and President Coventry were highly productive with excellent rapport. President Coventry expressed satisfaction with the enthusiasm and support shown by Vice President Vance and the entire US administration towards the Games.”
