“UK Braces for First Named Storm of the Year, Snow and Wind Alerts in Place”

Date:

New weather warnings have been issued in the UK as the country braces for its first named storm of the year. Britons are set to experience snow and wind alerts from the Met Office on Thursday and Friday as Storm Goretti is anticipated to hit. With a ‘danger to life’ warning in place due to the wind, people are advised to be prepared with essential supplies like torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.

A significant area in England and Wales is now under a snow warning from 6pm on Thursday until midday on Friday. The warning highlights that Storm Goretti is likely to bring heavy snow, causing disruptions and challenging travel conditions.

Travel delays are expected on roads, railways, and air travel, potentially leading to stranded vehicles. Rural communities might be isolated, power outages are possible, and mobile phone services could be affected. Meteo France has named the weather system Storm Goretti.

The warning indicates, “A deep low-pressure system will pass across the southern UK on Thursday and Friday, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds. Heavy snowfall is anticipated over higher ground in south Wales on Thursday, spreading to parts of England and Wales later in the day. Snow accumulation of 5-10 cm is forecasted, with potential amounts of up to 20 cm in certain areas, especially on elevated terrain. Strong winds may cause snow drifts, and the precipitation will move eastward on Friday.”

Meteo France has identified the strongest winds associated with Storm Goretti likely to affect northern France. Additionally, a yellow wind warning, including a danger to life alert, has been issued for the southwest of England from 3pm on Thursday until the end of the day. The Met Office warns of potential damage to buildings, travel disruptions, and advises caution regarding flying debris and high waves at coastal areas.

The Met Office emphasizes, “There is a slight risk of injuries and danger to life due to large waves and beach debris impacting seafronts, coastal roads, and properties. Flying debris also poses a risk of injuries and danger to life.”

Hundreds of schools across Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland were shut on Tuesday morning, and National Rail cautioned passengers about service cancellations and disruptions. An amber snow warning was in place for northern Scotland, with forecasts indicating widespread snow accumulation of 5-10 cm and up to 15 cm in some regions. A yellow snow and ice warning extended as far south as Perth until midnight on Tuesday.

Icy patches are expected into Wednesday, with yellow weather warnings covering much of England, Wales, and southern Scotland until 10am, and until 11am in Northern Ireland.
