In a recent statement, Donald Trump announced that the United States has secured ‘total access’ to Greenland through a new agreement with NATO members negotiated at Davos. Trump also revealed plans to deploy a segment of America’s “Golden Dome” missile defense system in Greenland.
During an interview with Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo at the World Economic Forum, Trump emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating that it grants the U.S. comprehensive access to Greenland for security purposes, including military access without limitations. He underscored the importance of national and international security in justifying the need for this access.
Trump assured that the U.S. would not incur any costs and would be able to station necessary military assets in Greenland as part of the agreement. While discussions with NATO are ongoing and the precise terms of the deal are yet to be finalized, Trump hinted at the withdrawal of potential tariffs on the UK and EU allies who opposed the annexation plan.
The agreement is expected to involve Greenland’s mineral resources and the installation of the U.S. Golden Dome missile defense system, with Trump affirming that the deal would be long-lasting. When asked about the specifics of U.S. territorial ownership in Greenland, Trump described the arrangement as intricate.
Additional discussions regarding Greenland are taking place, led by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Trump’s remarks follow his address at the World Economic Forum where he discussed the strategic importance of Greenland for national and international security.
While expressing the urgency for negotiations on Greenland’s acquisition, Trump disavowed any intentions of using military force, emphasizing a diplomatic approach. He reiterated the U.S.’s responsibility to safeguard Greenland and ensure its security for both American and European interests.
