Jockey Survives Horse Mishap and Carjacking Ordeal

Date:

A renowned jockey narrowly escaped a life-threatening incident when her pelvis was severely injured by a horse that fell on her. Sonja Logan, in 2023, was targeted by a group of individuals attempting to steal her car. During the harrowing event, they vandalized her vehicle, causing severe injuries to her face.

Suffering a broken nose, a cut lip, and damaged front teeth just three weeks before her wedding, Logan recounted the excruciating pain of being trapped under a half-ton racehorse as the most intense she had ever experienced in her life. The assailants fled when the alarm was raised and have evaded capture since.

Riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her husband Tommy and with a winning streak under her belt, Logan found herself in a dire situation when the six-year-old gelding became agitated by an unknown stimulus.

Recalling the incident, Logan explained that the horse reared up while they were in the starting gates, causing her to fall to the ground as the horse collapsed on top of her, crushing her pelvis instantly. Emergency services quickly responded, administering pain relief and securing her with a pelvic brace before transporting her to Darwin Royal Hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized treatment.

Describing the extent of her injuries, Logan detailed that her pelvis had been shattered akin to the impact of a car crash, necessitating surgical intervention. She underwent a procedure where two screws were inserted into her right hip and a plate reinforced with several screws was placed to stabilize her pelvis.

Reflecting on the incident, Logan acknowledged her fortune in surviving the ordeal, as the positioning of the horse could have led to fatal consequences if it had landed differently. She emphasized the excruciating pain she endured and the fear of potential spinal injuries.

Currently recovering at home with the aid of a walking frame, Logan anticipates a six to eight-month recovery period contingent on her healing progress and rehabilitation. Determined to return to riding, she remains optimistic, drawing inspiration from fellow jockeys who have overcome similar challenges.

Following the traumatic carjacking incident, Logan resumed her riding career, achieving success in competitions despite battling personal struggles behind the scenes, including depression and alcohol abuse. To combat these challenges, she turned to competitive bodybuilding, which helped her regain mental strength and manage anxiety, supported by a robust network of loved ones, particularly her husband Tommy, who has been a pillar of support throughout her recovery journey.
