The mayor of The Pas has stepped down from his position just weeks ahead of the upcoming local election and has decided not to seek re-election. Andre Murphy, who became the mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, made the announcement online on Monday night, confirming his immediate resignation.
CBC News verified Murphy’s resignation and his decision not to run for re-election this fall. With his departure, The Pas will be without a mayor for nine weeks until the new councils are elected on October 28, as no mayoral byelection will be conducted before then. Deputy mayor Carrie Atkinson will take over most of Murphy’s daily responsibilities until the election day.
Murphy revealed that he and his family reached the decision last week and informed the council on Monday. Initially considering running for another four-year term, he changed his mind during the summer, emphasizing his commitment to wholeheartedly serving the community. He expressed his desire to spend more time with his family, particularly his children and grandchildren in eastern Canada.
Reflecting on his tenure, Murphy highlighted his accomplishments in fostering closer relationships with neighboring communities and government bodies, removing obstacles for residents, and securing substantial grants for recreational and infrastructural development. He expressed confidence in the town’s council and administration to continue progressing in the same positive direction.
“I firmly believe that the town is in capable hands. I was part of a dedicated team that was driving our community forward, and I am confident that this progress will persist,” Murphy stated. He also emphasized the promising opportunities ahead for northern Manitoba and affirmed his support for the region’s future development.
CBC News has contacted The Pas town councillors for their response to Murphy’s resignation.
