Study Reveals Lesser-Known Networks Outperform Major Mobile Giants

Date:

Millions of consumers continue to rely on the major mobile networks such as EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2. However, a recent study by consumer group Which? suggests that these industry giants are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The report, based on feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, reveals that lesser-known networks often offer better value for money and superior customer service.

Which? conducted the survey to assess how well providers are meeting customer needs. The results indicate that the traditional “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind many smaller players in the market.

Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.

Price emerged as a significant factor in the study. The report found that customers on the Big Four networks paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only plan, whereas those on smaller networks paid just £9 on average.

Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, the study highlighted that their coverage and service quality are often on par with major networks since many of them utilize the infrastructure of larger companies. This allows customers to access comparable signal strength and service without the premium costs associated with well-known brands.

Switching providers is also simpler than many people realize, with some users able to transition networks in as little as 10 minutes. One respondent mentioned leaving O2 for SMARTY after a price hike, saving around £200 annually on their mobile plan.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform major mobile firms by providing better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers who are dissatisfied with their current service or seeking cost savings to consider switching to a provider that offers better value.

According to the Which? rankings:

– Talkmobile scored 83%
– Tesco Mobile scored 81%
– Giffgaff scored 79%
– SMARTY scored 79%
– Voxi scored 79%
– 1p Mobile scored 78%
– Lebara scored 78%
– Asda Mobile scored 77%
– EE scored 74%
– iD Mobile scored 73%
– Sky Mobile scored 73%
– Vodafone scored 72%
– Lycamobile scored 68%
– O2 scored 67%
– Three scored 65%
