“Rent Dispute Turns Deadly: Brother Stabbed to Death”

Date:

A man with a history of rent payment issues is facing murder charges after allegedly fatally stabbing his own brother during a dispute over rent collection. Thomas Campbell, 59, was taken into custody following the death of his brother, Erik Campbell, 53, in Gary, Indiana.

The incident unfolded when Erik visited Thomas’ residence to collect rent on behalf of their mother, leading to a heated argument between the siblings. The altercation escalated into a physical fight, during which Thomas wielded a knife and repeatedly stabbed Erik. Surveillance footage captured the intense struggle over the payment.

Erik was seen confronting Thomas about unpaid rent and demanding to see what he had in his hoodie pocket. Despite Erik’s attempts to disarm his brother, Thomas produced a knife and inflicted multiple stab wounds on Erik’s arm, neck, chest, and stomach. Erik succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake.

Thomas, who claimed to have acted in self-defense as Erik allegedly threatened him with a gun, contacted emergency services after the incident. No firearm was recovered at the scene, but witnesses recalled Thomas stabbing Erik in the front yard before discarding a blood-stained knife nearby.

According to police reports, Thomas stated that he resorted to using a knife when he believed Erik was reaching for a weapon. He claimed to have lost control and continued attacking Erik, citing past instances of bullying by his brother as a motive. Detectives revealed that tensions between the siblings had been escalating for over two decades, with their mother noting Thomas’ reluctance to pay rent.

Thomas has been formally charged with murder and is currently detained at Lake County Jail without bail. His court appearance is scheduled for January 12, where he could potentially face a sentence of up to 65 years if convicted.
