A red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for Storm Goretti, urging people to stay indoors. Storm Goretti, described as a “multi-hazard event” by the Met Office, is hitting the UK with the potential for up to 30cm of snow and wind gusts reaching 100mph. Weather warnings are in effect nationwide, with the South West region upgraded from amber to red alert.

The red warning covers Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, from 4 pm until midnight today, with exceptionally strong winds expected. Peak gusts of 80-100 mph are forecasted for exposed areas, lasting up to three hours. The Met Office warns of rapidly increasing winds with violent gusts persisting before easing, along with large waves posing risks to coastal areas.

Residents are advised to remain indoors if possible and secure loose items that could cause harm. Traveling by road is strongly discouraged during the hazardous conditions. Additional warnings have been issued for snow, wind, rain, and ice nationwide, anticipating disruptions and dangerous travel conditions.

Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong highlighted the diverse impacts of Storm Goretti, emphasizing the significant snowfall in Wales and the Midlands, as well as strong winds in the far South West. He cautioned the public to stay informed with updated forecasts and alerts from local authorities due to the complex and severe weather conditions.
