“Empowering Families in the AI Era: The Family Chat Initiative by Tesco Mobile”

Date:

AI is increasingly shaping our daily lives, posing challenges for parents trying to keep pace with the rapid changes. Families are facing the task of guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media interactions to school assignments and friendships, as underscored during the recent Safer Internet Day.

In light of this, the year 2026 marks our collaboration with Tesco Mobile, a proud sponsor of Safer Internet Day, to promote family discussions through The Family Chat initiative. The aim is to empower families to engage in open and honest dialogues about smartphones and online safety, alleviating the perceived complexity of the subject.

Renowned author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, alongside her husband Tom, will be engaging with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter in the digital realm.

The initial conversation within families will delve into the realm of AI and emphasize how Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub serves as a valuable support system for parents with children of varying ages up to 18.

The Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17), like many families, heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. However, Anna and Emmanuel acknowledge their struggle in comprehending AI, which could hinder their ability to ensure online safety.

Anna candidly admits, “I’m not adept at identifying AI. There have been instances where I’ve mistaken things as real, only for the kids to point out, ‘That’s AI, Mom!'”

The challenge of discerning between real and fake content is further compounded, as highlighted by Joshua’s observation regarding the prevalence of highly realistic AI content on platforms like TikTok.

With academic tasks increasingly transitioning to online platforms driven by AI-generated content, the Karley family and Giovanna find themselves navigating this new educational landscape.

Giovanna reflects on her eldest child’s shift to secondary school, noting the computer-centric nature of homework assignments. She emphasizes the importance of not vilifying AI but rather evaluating its usage continually to ensure optimal benefits.

To facilitate safe AI usage among children, consider the following guidelines:

1. Engage in AI Exploration Together: Collaborate as a family to experiment with AI through creative activities, fostering a sense of teamwork and fun.
2. Acknowledge AI Fallibility: Encourage children to fact-check information provided by AI and inquire about the sources of data.
3. Review Age Restrictions and Privacy Settings: Prioritize platforms with age-appropriate content and regularly review privacy configurations for enhanced online safety.
4. Foster Discussions on Authenticity: Educate children on discerning genuine information from misinformation online to cultivate digital literacy and confidence.
5. Leverage AI as a Tool, Not a Substitute: Encourage creativity and critical thinking in children, utilizing AI to inspire ideas rather than replacing the creative process.

The Karley family appreciates having a dependable resource like Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for guidance. This platform offers accessible resources and toolkits to facilitate discussions on AI safety with children, including tailored tips for different age groups developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre.

Moreover, the hub features engaging educational AI quizzes from the UK Safer Internet Centre to involve the entire family in conversations about online safety.

While the Karley family already prioritizes online safety discussions, they have found Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to be a valuable asset in enhancing their understanding and support for their children.

Emmanuel expresses their satisfaction, stating, “We can now delve deeper together, learn collaboratively, and better equip ourselves to support them.”
