A woman faced legal consequences after leaving her 10-month-old daughter unattended in a hot car while she worked at a fast food establishment. Hannah Faith Cormier contacted authorities to report that she had unintentionally left her baby in the vehicle for approximately one-and-a-half hours during her shift. The infant was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, despite medical efforts, she did not survive.
Louisiana’s Jefferson Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office disclosed that Cormier received a five-year prison sentence with hard labor, without the possibility of probation, parole, or sentence suspension, as the child was under 10 years old. Cormier was arrested in August 2024 and later charged with negligent homicide on October 2 of the same year, to which she pleaded no contest.
Negligent homicide, as per Louisiana law, pertains to the unintentional killing of an individual due to criminal negligence. District Attorney Lauren Heinen expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of the 10-month-old, emphasizing the community’s profound grief. Heinen stated, “No sentence can reverse the loss or alleviate the pain felt by all. Despite the challenging circumstances, we remain committed to advocating for the protection of every child, who deserves a voice in safeguarding their well-being.”
Statistics from the US National Safety Council revealed that 31 children died in the US in incidents where they were left in hot cars, with an average of 37 children under 15 succumbing to heatstroke annually in similar circumstances. Both in 2018 and 2019, a record number of 53 children perished after being left in hot vehicles.
