McDonald’s customers are expressing anger following the announcement of a significant alteration to the loyalty program. The fast-food giant is set to raise the points requirement for redeeming free items through MyMcDonald’s Rewards.
Currently, customers need 5,500 points to claim products like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting March 17, the needed points will increase to 6,500 for these items, with customers earning 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
The current 1,500 points required for items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries will also see an increase to 2,000 points. Additionally, the threshold for items like a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will rise from 2,500 points to 3,500 points. To redeem a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, customers will now need 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.
Responding to concerns, a McDonald’s spokesperson explained that the adjustments to the loyalty scheme are in response to escalating food and supply expenses. They mentioned that while the points needed have been raised across all tiers, new fan-favorite items like Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich are now available for redemption, offering more choices to customers.
The loyalty scheme changes coincide with the launch of McDonald’s new menu, featuring innovative items like the Surf N’ Turf burger and the Chicken Cheeseburger. Additionally, customers can enjoy new offerings such as the Espresso Milkshake and Chilli Cheese Bites.
In a social media discussion, customers expressed discontent with the loyalty scheme modifications, with one stating they were unhappy and another asking for the start date to cash in their points.
