Gareth Collett’s career path was profoundly influenced by the IRA bombings in Hyde Park and Regent’s Park on July 20, 1982. The tragic incident, which resulted in the deaths of 11 military personnel and seven horses, sparked a determination in the 16-year-old to pursue a profession in bomb disposal.
Reflecting on the bombings, Gareth expressed his shock and anger at the senseless loss of life, both human and animal. The event raised questions in his mind about the motivations behind such acts of violence and inspired him to consider a role in assisting those facing similar dangerous situations.
Over the course of 34 years, Gareth, now a retired Brigadier, has had a distinguished career serving in various war zones, investigating war crimes, engaging with dignitaries like the late Queen, and rendering safe approximately 75,000 explosive devices. While his efforts have saved numerous lives, they have also taken a toll on his mental health, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
At 59 years old and residing in London, Gareth has channeled his experiences into a fictional book titled “Blasted Religion,” drawing from his own life as a bomb disposal expert. The writing process served as a cathartic outlet for him, prompting him to consider penning his autobiography if allowed by the Official Secrets Act.
Coming from a family with a strong military background, Gareth’s decision to pursue bomb disposal diverged from the norm. His interest in saving lives rather than taking them, coupled with his forefathers’ military service, steered him towards a career path focused on diffusing explosive threats.
Gareth underwent extensive specialized training in ordnance and bomb disposal techniques, emphasizing the critical importance of assessing threats accurately and methodically to ensure safety. Despite the popular portrayals of bomb disposal on television, Gareth explained the stark reality and complexity of the task, highlighting the need for meticulous attention to detail and expertise.
