“Dolly Parton to Grace Nashville Airport”

Date:

The late Dolly Parton will soon have a new namesake as Nashville International Airport in Tennessee is poised to be renamed in her honor. Following a recent vote by the board of commissioners, the decision to rename the airport gained traction, especially after the iconic singer’s passing last month at the age of 80. Fans initiated a social media campaign advocating for the airport to bear the name of the queen of country, a call supported by Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

Describing Dolly Parton as an integral part of Tennessee’s identity, Gov. Lee expressed that it is fitting for Nashville International Airport to reflect the legacy of the beloved singer, embodying her music, generosity, faith, and kindness. The move to rename the airport was deemed significant by Gov. Lee as a tribute to Dolly’s remarkable contributions, including the substantial economic impact she brings to Tennessee through her Dollywood theme park, estimated at over $1.8 billion annually.

Having been born in Tennessee and making her mark on the global stage, Dolly Parton’s early roots in the state paved the way for her illustrious career. The renaming process for the airport is currently underway, with considerations being made to align with the airport’s guidelines, which typically require a two-year gap following an individual’s passing before naming any property after them.

While the specific name for the airport honoring Dolly Parton is yet to be determined, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority assured that they are collaborating diligently to integrate her name and legacy thoughtfully into the airport’s identity.
