“Iconic Voice of Calgary Flames Radio, Peter Maher, Passes at 79”

Date:

Peter Maher, the long-time voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, has passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed on Thursday. Maher began his tenure as the team’s play-by-play announcer for radio broadcasts in 1980 and continued for 33 consecutive seasons. Known for his iconic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher’s passion and dedication shone through during his illustrious career, which included the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their 2004 finals appearance.

Retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season, Maher’s influence extended far beyond the broadcast booth, making him an integral part of the Flames community. The Flames expressed their condolences, acknowledging Maher’s lasting impact on fans and the team.

Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher had previously called Toronto Maple Leafs games before relocating to Calgary when the Flames moved from Atlanta in 1980. Remembered for his memoir and his significant contributions to Flames broadcasts, Maher’s legacy as a gifted storyteller of the team’s history remains unmatched.

Rob Kerr, Maher’s former colleague in the Saddledome press box, mourned the loss, emphasizing Maher’s journalistic integrity and commitment to delivering authentic, captivating broadcasts. Kerr highlighted Maher’s meticulous approach, citing an incident during the Flames’ 2004 playoff run where Maher’s exuberant call garnered attention but led him to seek validation from the team’s management.

Maher’s illustrious career also included calling NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, Maher’s exceptional work as an NHL broadcaster was recognized with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.

Upon his retirement, Maher was honored with the naming of the Scotiabank Saddledome broadcast booth in his honor. Additionally, an annual award in Calgary, inspired by Maher’s values of sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect, continues to pay tribute to his enduring legacy in the sports broadcasting world.
