Detour Discotheque, a unique traveling party, is set to make its way to a nunnery in Matera, southern Italy. The event, scheduled for a 70s-themed weekend in September, will be held at various venues including Fondazione Monacelle, a former convent turned cultural center, and Area 8, a creative space.
The exclusive Detour Discotheque festival, limited to 300 attendees, will coincide with Matera’s designation as the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026. The city’s distinctive architecture, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cave districts known as the Sassi, will provide a stunning backdrop for retro disco events.
Detour Discotheque, recognized by Time Out as one of the “Best New Things to Do in the World,” has previously hosted events in remote locations like an Iceland fjord, a Scottish island, and a Swiss mountaintop. The upcoming Matera festival follows the success of the 2025 event in Puglia, with founder Jonny Ensall praising Matera’s beauty and cultural vibrancy.
Located in the Basilicata region near Puglia, Matera is easily accessible from Bari Airport, offering visitors a glimpse into its well-preserved historical charm. Known for its role in the James Bond film “No Time to Die” and as a former European Capital of Culture, Matera continues to attract global guests with its mix of history and modernity.
Past editions of Detour Discotheque have featured renowned DJs like Erol Alkan and DJ Paulette. Tickets for the upcoming event, starting at £195, are now available for reservation, with a launch party scheduled at the Aethos Hotel in London on February 12.
