“Grandmother Dies in Shark Attack During Vacation”

Date:

A grandmother tragically lost her life in a shark attack during her vacation, where she was discovered in a pool of blood with a severe arm injury. Arlene Lillis, aged 56, was swimming near the shoreline in the US Virgin Islands when witnesses heard a distressing scream. Initially mistaken for struggling in the water, onlookers soon noticed significant blood loss from her arm.

Following the shark encounter, Arlene’s arm was severed below the elbow, and she was found in distress but conscious. Two brave swimmers rushed to her aid, pulling her to safety and applying a makeshift tourniquet to control the bleeding. Christopher Carroll, a former lifeguard who assisted in the rescue, comforted Arlene as she spoke, while Ryan Connot, the other swimmer, recounted her last words expressing fear of dying due to excessive blood loss.

Described as a caring mother and a Minnesota native, Arlene was known for her compassionate nature, as evidenced by her previous adoption and care for an injured stray dog. Her neighbor, Andrew Gamble, fondly remembered her as a lively individual who enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking, snorkeling, and had a profound love for animals.

The fatal incident took place near the shore in western St Croix on a Thursday afternoon. Despite swift emergency response efforts, Arlene succumbed to her injuries later at a local hospital. Authorities, led by Daryl Jaschen of the Virgin Islands’ emergency management agency, confirmed her death and clarified that no other victims were found following a search of the area.

While the specific shark species involved remains unconfirmed, officials stressed the rarity of shark attacks in the US Virgin Islands. Nicole Angeli from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources highlighted the infrequency of shark bites in the region, with only a handful of reported incidents in the past decade. Plans are underway to enhance wildlife safety measures at tourist sites through increased signage and information sharing.

Investigations into the shark attack are ongoing, with authorities exploring the circumstances that led to the tragic incident. Notably, the International Shark Attack File based in Florida has recorded a total of 79 unprovoked shark attacks in the Caribbean since 1749, with four incidents documented in the US Virgin Islands.
