“Canadian Liquor Stores Reconsider Ban on American Alcohol”

Date:

Canadian liquor stores may soon see a return of American alcohol products, as provincial bans imposed during the trade disputes with U.S. President Donald Trump are being reconsidered. Some officials and consumers remain hesitant about welcoming back U.S. spirits.

Reports from Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston indicate that Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged provinces to allow the resumption of American alcohol sales. Kinew mentioned that Carney emphasized the importance of this move in the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade negotiations, suggesting that progress could be linked to resolving the alcohol issue.

“The prime minister expressed his desire for us to reintroduce American alcohol in stores,” Kinew stated during a press briefing. “Although he didn’t exactly plead, it was close to that.”

In Quebec, Premier Christine Fréchette mentioned the possibility of lifting the ban, pending an evaluation of how the new trade terms with the U.S. would affect the province’s economy.

“We need a comprehensive understanding of the impact on Quebec’s economy,” Fréchette stated in an interview with CBC News. “If the overall impact is positive, we may consider restoring American alcohol on SAQ shelves.”

A representative from SAQ informed Radio-Canada that American alcohol is currently stored in warehouses in Montreal and Quebec City, and reintroducing these products may take some time.

Support Canadian Brands, Kinew Advocates

Kinew advises consumers to continue supporting Canadian products, even if American alcohol becomes available once again. He emphasized that his province has not yet agreed to resume sales of U.S. spirits.

“Once American alcohol is back on the shelves, Canadians should prioritize local purchases that contribute to our economy,” he urged.

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette shared that she had a detailed discussion with Prime Minister Mark Carney regarding the potential U.S. trade agreement. Pending positive outcomes for Quebec, the government may reconsider stocking U.S. alcohol.

“When American alcohol returns to Liquor Mart shelves, Canadians should retain their loyalty to local products that support our workforce,” he emphasized. “Invest in Canadian goods.”

The Yukon government announced plans for a phased reintroduction of American alcohol brands in stores in the coming weeks, contingent upon trade negotiations.

The restrictions on U.S. alcohol sales by provinces have been a strategic leverage point for Canada throughout the trade discussions.
