Britain is ready to assist its allies in intercepting shadow ships linked to Russia, which are providing financial support to Vladimir Putin’s military efforts, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to crack down on Russia’s clandestine fleet, consisting of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false identities to avoid Western sanctions. The UK is urging more proactive measures against these covert vessels, which are channeling funds to the Kremlin for the conflict in Ukraine and causing harm to crucial undersea cables.
Although British personnel have not yet boarded any of these ships, they supported the US in a bold operation to seize a tanker with Russian ties last month, accused of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. Officials are reportedly exploring the legal framework for potential military action.
During a visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper toured a patrol vessel and met with members of the Finnish Border Guard, responsible for defending against Russian threats along the extensive border of Finland. The patrol ship was involved in a recent operation targeting a Russia-affiliated vessel accused of damaging undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.
In an interview with the Mirror, the Foreign Secretary highlighted the disruptive impact of the Russian shadow fleet on sanctions, the Ukrainian conflict, environmental concerns, and national security, particularly related to undersea infrastructure. Ms. Cooper affirmed the UK’s readiness to conduct enforcement actions but stressed the importance of collaborative efforts with international partners to intensify pressure on the shadow fleet.
She also advocated for a complete ban on the shipment of Russian oil to cut off a vital revenue stream for Moscow. The UK is closely monitoring enforcement actions by European allies against illicit vessels, including operations in the Baltic Sea and off the coast of France, Ms. Cooper added.
Furthermore, Ms. Cooper observed a demonstration by the Finnish Border Guards illustrating vessel seizure tactics, including rappelling armed personnel from helicopters. The successful raid on the Fitburg and subsequent crew arrest served as a strong deterrent. Finland retains the authority to intervene with military force against rogue ships when necessary.
Amid a surge in Russian vessels threatening the UK in recent years, Defense Secretary John Healey issued a stark warning to Putin following an incident involving a Russian spy ship shining lasers at RAF pilots outside UK waters. Ms. Cooper reiterated the UK’s determination to clamp down on the Russian shadow fleet and Putin’s activities, emphasizing the protection of national security within UK waters.
Additionally, the Foreign Secretary engaged in discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb as part of a two-day Arctic Circle tour. Security concerns in the High North region have heightened, prompted by Donald Trump’s remarks about potentially annexing Greenland to counter perceived threats from Russia or China.
