A retired couple, Barbara and Lawrence Blackwood, aged 72 and 75, have shared their experience of earning income and exploring different parts of the UK through home-sitting.
In 2017, the Blackwoods, former administrative secretary Barbara and ex-police officer Lawrence, ventured into home-sitting as a way to stay active during their retirement.
Home-sitting entails taking care of someone’s residence while they are away, including looking after their pets when necessary.
The couple now engage in approximately one home-sit per month, spending nearly half of the year away from their own home.
Barbara expressed, “After retiring, we didn’t want to be idle. Home-sitting was a perfect fit for us.”
Home-sitters receive a minimum of £333.06 for a two-week assignment without pets, while caring for two dogs and a cat yields £367.92 for the same timeframe.

The Blackwoods, residing in Perthshire, Scotland, have found home-sitting to be a cost-effective way to manage utility bills, especially during colder months.
Barbara estimates savings of around £47 per month during a winter assignment lasting three to four weeks. From September to April, they save an average of £31 monthly.
Barbara noted, “The savings are less substantial in summer, and in Scottish winters, we cannot entirely switch off the heating.”
In addition to covering travel expenses, which the couple often reserve for vacations, and providing a daily food allowance, they receive compensation for assignments. Depending on the tasks, such as pet care, there may be additional payments.
Lawrence shared, “We have explored various parts of Scotland through home-sitting, visiting places we might not have otherwise seen. The flexibility and diversity are what make this experience unique.”
He added, “It feels like a brief getaway—a self-catering holiday. While there are responsibilities, the experience is rewarding and fulfilling.”
Barbara emphasized that their top priority is the well-being of the animals they care for, ensuring they feel safe and comfortable in their familiar routine.
With almost a decade of home-sitting experience, the couple often receive repeat assignments, with one family welcoming them back regularly since their
