Shoppers were saddened by the announcement of the permanent closure of a family-operated art and stationery store. Clarkes of Sussex shared the news via social media, stating that the time had come to close its Burgess Hill branch in West Sussex after over four decades of operation. The store is set to shut down in April, although an exact closing date has not yet been disclosed, prompting emotional responses from loyal customers.
Numerous customers expressed their sorrow, with one shopper mentioning, “You will be greatly missed. Visiting your store has always been a delight.” Another individual commented, “This news is truly disheartening.” A third patron shared, “I have been a customer for many years, and your team has always been supportive, respectful, and kind.” Additionally, a fourth customer remarked, “I am truly saddened to hear this news – your store and staff are fantastic.”
Last year, Clarkes of Sussex ceased its operations in Brighton after 25 years but still maintains other outlets across Sussex, including one in Haywards Heath. Meanwhile, Clarkes in Lewes, under different ownership, is also closing in March.
Jay Patel, the proprietor of Clarkes of Sussex, conveyed the closure of the Burgess Hill store via social media, expressing mixed emotions. Patel reflected on over 40 years of service to the community and his personal 35-year journey, stating that it was time to bid farewell in April. He expressed gratitude to customers for their loyalty, kindness, and memorable interactions over the years, emphasizing the significance of the relationships built.
Patel added, “Although this chapter is ending, the memories, friendships, and bonds we have forged will endure. I will miss interacting with you and being part of your daily lives. Thank you for being an integral part of my journey. I wish you all happiness, good health, and success in the future.”
