“Anthony Joshua’s Nigerian Driver Faces Charges After Fatal Crash”

Date:

Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is expected to face charges for ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s close associates. Reports from The Daily Mail indicate that a 47-year-old member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, who has been serving the boxer during his visits to the country, will likely be formally charged within the next 48 hours.

After being discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve, the driver was transported to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal crash occurred earlier in the week. Following his release, he underwent questioning for several hours and provided an official account of the events leading up to the accident, which resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s friends Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.

Joshua, who was also discharged from the hospital, accompanied his mother in paying respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK. A police source mentioned that the driver, after receiving treatment for minor injuries, was taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. The source indicated that a decision on charging the driver for reckless driving is expected within the next 48 hours, with a potential court appearance on Friday, pending the progress of the legal process.

The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by the authorities. Investigations revealed overspeeding and a burst tire on the SUV Joshua was in as contributing factors to the accident.

Eddie Hearn, the chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, expressed condolences for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele. Sky has announced a discounted Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the upcoming season, offering extensive coverage of live matches across various leagues, including the Premier League. Sky will broadcast a minimum of 215 live Premier League games in the upcoming season, marking a significant increase in coverage.
