U.S. Vice President JD Vance shared his views on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising event on Wednesday. He mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to appear tougher than U.S. President Donald Trump, while acknowledging Conservative MP Jamil Jivani as a valuable supporter for Canada.
Vance described Carney as amicable but noted his attempts to project strength against Trump. He highlighted the role of Jivani, a Canadian MP with a positive rapport, as an influential advocate behind the scenes.
In discussions, Vance also referred to Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader in Canada, as having minimal impact on the negotiations. The Vice President emphasized the importance of changing Canada’s approach and commended Jivani for effectively advocating on key issues such as energy and automobile tariffs.
The trade deal, which temporarily averted new tariffs on Canadian products, was praised by Trump as beneficial for all parties. Reports suggested that the agreement involved reductions in tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, with a directive for Canadian provinces to reintroduce American alcohol to their shelves.
Vance highlighted the evolving dynamics between the U.S. and Canada, emphasizing a shift in behavior influenced by the negotiations. He mentioned the involvement of key figures like Greer and Lutnick in the talks, with his own increased engagement due to his connection with Jivani.
Jivani’s contributions to the negotiations were recognized, with Vance noting his active participation and positive impact on the discussions. The cooperation between Vance and Jivani, stemming from their longstanding friendship, was underscored as a significant factor in the negotiation process.
As discussions continue between the two nations, the role of key individuals like Jivani in fostering collaboration and advocating for mutual benefits remains a crucial aspect of the ongoing trade negotiations.
