“Feline with Raccoon Rabies Raises Concern in Quebec”

Date:

Another feline has been diagnosed with raccoon rabies this summer, this time in Saint-Anicet, Quebec, within the Montérégie region. According to Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre, three individuals required preventive treatment after encountering the infected cat. This incident occurred a week after the first case of a cat with the disease was reported in Godmanchester, also in the Montérégie area.

Santé Québec emphasizes the significance of maintaining pets’ vaccinations up to date as the outbreak of raccoon rabies continues to spread across the Estrie, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec regions. Pet owners are advised to ensure that their animals do not wander freely outside without supervision and to avoid contact with unfamiliar domestic and wild creatures, regardless of their appearance or health status.

In the event of a bite, scratch, or contact with the saliva of a potentially rabid animal, the public health authorities recommend washing the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes and immediately calling Info-Santé at 811. Prompt preventive treatment is crucial to prevent the disease from developing.

Animals infected with rabies may display various symptoms, including behavioral changes, aggression, biting tendencies, isolation, reduced appetite, excessive salivation, or an unsteady gait. If a pet exhibits these signs, it should be isolated from other animals and humans and promptly examined by a veterinarian.

In a recent development, the Environment Ministry confirmed the first case of raccoon rabies in the Centre-du-Québec region in Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham. Residents of the Eastern Townships, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec are urged to report dead, injured, disoriented, paralyzed, or abnormally aggressive raccoons, skunks, or foxes through an online form. Individuals living outside these regions can report potentially rabid wildlife by contacting the Environment Ministry at 1 877 346-6763.
