When voters head to the polls in Gorton and Denton this Thursday, they hold the future of over 6,000 local children in their hands. These children are set to benefit from the end of the controversial two-child rule starting on April 1st, with some low-income families expected to receive an additional £70 per week.
Despite progress, child poverty continues to affect a significant number of children in the constituency, with almost half, 48%, living in poverty. In Longsight, an alarming 73% of children are growing up in impoverished conditions.
The upcoming changes by the Labour government aimed at supporting children are anticipated to lead to a substantial decrease in these figures come April. The improvements are expected to enhance children’s educational outcomes, providing them with better opportunities.
With the implementation of more breakfast clubs, free school meals, and additional Sure Start centers on the horizon, the government’s efforts to combat poverty are gaining momentum. These initiatives aim to uplift children from poverty and open up new prospects for them.
Recently, the Reform party expressed their intention to abolish the two-child rule as well. However, their shift in stance, including the decision to reinstate the rule, has raised concerns about pushing children back into poverty. It has been highlighted that the beneficiaries of such policies are not just workless parents, as claimed by Reform propagandists, but also families where at least one parent is employed.
A significant portion of children affected by the two-child rule are either too young, ill, or disabled, preventing their parents from working. Therefore, the portrayal of parents as lazy or irresponsible is inaccurate and unjust.
The upcoming by-election offers a clear choice between supporting children’s escape from poverty with Labour’s local candidate Angeliki Stogia or reverting to past Tory policies that perpetuated poverty.
