Barry Hearn criticized Conor Benn’s departure from Matchroom, labeling it as lacking in class as he switched to Zuffa Boxing without engaging with Eddie Hearn. Benn, 29, revealed the split and will now be under the management of the Saudi-backed promoter led by UFC president Dana White.
Having been associated with his previous promoters for a decade, Benn opted to part ways despite their support, even through tough times such as a failed drug test. Eddie Hearn praised Benn following his victory over Chris Eubank Jnr last year.
Benn stated that Zuffa had offered him an irresistible opportunity, but when Eddie Hearn tried to discuss their partnership, Benn showed no interest in communication, which disappointed Hearn Sr.
Expressing his disappointment, Barry Hearn remarked on the situation, emphasizing the personal aspect beyond financial matters. He highlighted the existing team’s loyalty to Benn and criticized the abrupt dissolution of those relationships.
Benn’s move to Zuffa makes him the second notable signing after Jai Opetaia. Despite the potential opportunities discussed after his win over Eubank Jnr, Eddie Hearn will no longer be guiding Benn’s career.
Barry Hearn noted that Benn preferred legal discussions over a direct meeting, which he found to be outrageous after their long-standing professional relationship. Benn, set to challenge for the WBC welterweight title, defended his decision based on the lucrative nature of the offer presented to him.
Hearn Sr. clarified that Benn’s choice of a different path wouldn’t have been an issue if handled differently, stressing the importance of mutual standards and respect in their working relationship.
