Tragic student death underscores dangers of spontaneous night swims

Date:

On a tragic note, a student known for his kindness and respectfulness met a fatal end due to cold water shock following a spontaneous nighttime swim with friends. Michael Oppong-Yeboah, 18, was part of a group of approximately ten students from a jiu jistu society who decided to take a dip off East Hoe beach in Plymouth in March 2024.

During the ill-fated swim, the environmental science student swam briefly in turbulent waters before encountering difficulties and calling out for help as a powerful wave struck him, leading to his disappearance from sight. The subsequent inquest at Exeter Coroner’s Court revealed that cold water shock incapacitated him, impairing his swimming ability and causing him to sink. His body was recovered at Devonport naval dockyard three weeks later.

Assistant coroner Ian Arrow, concluding the inquiry, emphasized the dangers of entering cold and rough seas, particularly at night, urging the public to be cautious. Michael’s mother, Doris Kyeremaa, fondly described him as a gentle, caring, and God-fearing individual who prioritized the happiness of others. She highlighted his love for children, animals, swimming, and volunteering at a local food bank, showcasing his compassionate and helpful nature throughout his life.

Michael’s educational journey from Chater Infant School and Chater Junior School in Hertfordshire to Westfield Academy highlighted his dedication to studies and his supportive role at home. His mother reminisced about his cheerful presence and expressed hope that his unfulfilled wishes would be granted in his absence.
