Labour’s Wes Streeting Stresses Policy Accuracy Over Politics

Date:

Labour’s Wes Streeting has defended the party’s policy U-turns, emphasizing the importance of striving for accuracy from the start. Streeting suggested that the government should make it a priority in 2026 to avoid the need for reversals after facing criticism for multiple policy changes.

The Treasury is reportedly crafting a support package for the pub sector following backlash over a significant rise in business rates. Recent backtracks include decisions on winter fuel payments, disability benefit cuts, and alterations to inheritance tax hikes on farms.

Speaking at the Institute for Government conference, Streeting acknowledged the impact of U-turns but highlighted the value of constructive feedback. He stressed the need to prioritize making the right decisions over political considerations.

Referencing an NHS initiative called “get it right first time,” Streeting urged a similar approach in government decision-making. He also criticized a culture of making excuses within the Labour Party and emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for policy outcomes.

The comments are seen as a rebuke to former aide Paul Ovenden’s criticism of Labour’s approach. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham also weighed in, accusing Whitehall departments of hindering devolution efforts and advocating for comprehensive reforms to enhance efficiency and decision-making processes.
