A man successfully climbed a frozen waterfall in Gordale Scar, located near Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales, amid the cold Arctic conditions gripping Britain. Mick Ellerton, aged 48, accomplished this challenging feat after the plummeting temperatures caused the waterfall to freeze over.
This remarkable achievement occurred just before the impending severe weather conditions predicted by the Met Office. Storm Goretti is forecasted to bring heavy snow and high winds of up to 90mph across the UK, prompting the issuance of widespread weather warnings.
The heavy snowfall this week resulted in numerous school closures and isolated some remote communities in the northern regions. Mr. Ellerton, impressed by the tranquility of the Yorkshire Dales, emphasized its beauty compared to more popular tourist destinations like the Peak District.
Describing his ascent up the icy waterfall, Mr. Ellerton mentioned that despite his experience, the ideal conditions for such a climb are rare. An instructor at Lost Earth Adventures, he also volunteers for a cave rescue charity, utilizing his ice climbing skills acquired since childhood.
Originally from Australia, Mr. Ellerton now resides in Skipton, North Yorkshire, and partakes in mountain climbing not only for pleasure but also to maintain the necessary expertise for mountain rescue operations. Stressing the importance of safety and proper equipment while exploring the countryside, he encourages outdoor activities for physical and mental well-being.
As Storm Goretti approaches, the Met Office anticipates significant snow impacts in Wales and the Midlands, with potential disruptions from rain and strong winds in other regions. Neil Armstrong, the Chief Forecaster, highlighted the need for caution and preparedness to mitigate the storm’s effects on the UK population.
