A teenager, initially misidentified as a victim of a fatal car crash, has been identified correctly after a mix-up by the police. The incident occurred in Rotherham on December 13, where two teenagers lost their lives in a collision involving a silver Toyota Corolla.
During a hearing at Doncaster Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that 18-year-old Joshua Johnson, not Trevor Wynn as previously stated, was one of the deceased individuals. The misidentification came to light when Joshua’s father expressed doubts about the identification process.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles from South Yorkshire Police confirmed Joshua’s identity using dental records. The police force has self-referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for an investigation into the identification error.
In a statement released by Joshua’s family, they described him as a caring individual who enjoyed stock car racing. The family expressed their deep sorrow and requested privacy as they navigate through their grief.
Two individuals, aged 18 and 19, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently on bail as investigations continue.
