“Sainsbury’s merges Chop Chop delivery app into main app”

Date:

Sainsbury’s has decided to discontinue its Chop Chop rapid delivery app, merging its functionality into the main Sainsbury’s app instead. Launched in 2016, Chop Chop aimed to provide grocery deliveries within an hour, albeit at a premium rate, and was operational in 50 Sainsbury’s stores.

Regular users of Chop Chop may have already noticed that the standalone app has been removed. Attempts to download it now redirect users to the main Sainsbury’s app. Jim Banks, head of experience design at Sainsbury’s, announced this change on LinkedIn, stating that the integration was intended to simplify the shopping experience for customers.

According to Banks, the decision to decommission Chop Chop and consolidate it into the Sainsbury’s app was made to eliminate the need for customers to choose between apps. He expressed gratitude to the teams involved in the effort, emphasizing that the move contributes to streamlining their ecosystem and enhancing the ease and personal touch of the shopping process.

Chop Chop had been a competitor to Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service, offering delivery within 20 minutes. In other supermarket news from the UK, Co-op disclosed plans to open 18 new or upgraded stores within the first quarter of 2026.

The inaugural Co-op store for 2026 will open in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, as part of a new neighborhood development. Additionally, some stores are set to reopen after renovation, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London.

Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, highlighted the company’s focus on establishing local stores that serve as community hubs, offering quality products, value, and various promotions tailored to meet customer needs. She expressed enthusiasm for the Oxfordshire store opening and the broader plan to expand Co-op’s presence across UK high streets and communities.

Furthermore, Co-op announced its commitment to creating thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years, with a £70 million investment set to generate 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030.
