The police watchdog has initiated an inquiry into a disturbing identity mix-up that resulted in tragic consequences. The incident involved a fatal car crash in Rotherham on December 13th, where a 17-year-old girl driving a Toyota, alongside passenger Trevor Wynn, was involved in a collision with a tree, leading to her death and the death of 18-year-old Joshua Johnson.
Following the accident, a harrowing mistake occurred when Joshua’s family spent the Christmas period believing the critically injured Trevor was their loved one, who was sedated in the hospital. The confusion was only rectified when Trevor regained consciousness and alerted medical staff to his true identity.
Expressing their anguish, Joshua Johnson’s family described the experience as unimaginable, having spent weeks by Trevor’s side under the mistaken belief that he was their deceased family member. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the misidentification of the individuals involved in the crash.
IOPC Director Emily Barry extended condolences to all affected parties, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and emphasizing the need for a comprehensive independent investigation to uncover the reasons behind the error. The families involved have been offered support, with Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane expressing shock over the mix-up and affirming the commitment to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
Additionally, two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, with one facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving and the other for allegedly perverting the course of justice. Both suspects are currently on bail pending further investigations.
