“Team GB Eyes Record Medal Haul at Milano Cortina Winter Olympics”

Date:

Team GB is setting its sights on a record-breaking Winter Olympics campaign at the upcoming Milano Cortina Games. UK Sport, the organization that supports Olympic and Paralympic sports in the UK, anticipates a medal haul ranging from four to eight in northern Italy.

The British team’s previous best performance at a Winter Games was at Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, where they secured five medals, including one gold. However, Team GB officials are aiming for even greater success this time around.

The optimism surrounding Team GB’s prospects stems from the strong lineup heading to Italy, which includes world champions, X Games gold medalists, and World Cup podium finishers. British winter athletes had a stellar 2024/25 season, claiming nine World Championship medals across various disciplines.

Notably, British skiers and snowboarders achieved significant success with 28 major podium finishes in Olympic events, three Crystal Globes, and a World Championship title courtesy of Zoe Atkin. Chef de mission Eve Muirhead, a curling gold medalist in 2022, emphasized the meticulous preparations aimed at enabling athletes to excel under pressure.

Muirhead expressed confidence in the team’s potential, citing the determination to challenge the existing standards despite facing challenges in accessing snow and ice compared to some rivals. With high expectations set for Team GB across various disciplines, Mirror Sport highlights the top contenders poised to clinch medals in Italy.

Leading the charge is double men’s skeleton world champion Weston, who dominated the World Cup circuit with three consecutive overall titles. Alongside Weston, Marcus Wyatt stands out as another strong contender for a podium finish.

Among the standout performers is two-time World Cup gold medalist Muir, excelling in slopestyle and big air events. Brookes made history as snowboarding’s youngest world champion and is poised to make a mark at the Olympics. Atkin, the current halfpipe world champion, is another athlete to watch after a successful World Cup season.

Bankes, a former world champion, and the mixed team are expected to shine in figure skating, potentially securing Britain’s first Olympic medal in the discipline since 1994. The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, scheduled from February 6-22, will offer over 850 hours of live coverage on discovery+ via Prime Video.
