“Cruise Passengers Warned: Get Insured or Risk Boarding Refusal”

Date:

Holidaymakers preparing for a cruise have been cautioned that they might face refusal if they lack the necessary documentation. Cruises have gained immense popularity recently due to their hassle-free way of exploring various breathtaking destinations globally. From the sunny Caribbean routes to European voyages and transatlantic journeys, there is a diverse array of cruises to suit everyone.

Recent data from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) disclosed that a record 2.4 million passengers embarked on a cruise in 2024. Additionally, a study by YouGov in July last year indicated that 10% of Brits were considering a cruise in the upcoming year.

There has been an increase in younger passengers opting for cruise vacations. A report from CLIA revealed that the average age of UK cruise passengers has been decreasing, with individuals aged 20-39 accounting for 20% of global passengers.

While the growth in the cruise industry is positive, Post Office Travel Insurance has issued a strong advisory highlighting the essential requirements for a cruise, including the necessity of travel insurance. They emphasize that passengers without valid travel insurance may be barred from boarding.

According to World of Cruising, many cruise lines mandate proof of travel insurance during check-in, especially for cruises outside the EU where medical expenses can be exorbitant. Certain ships, including Cunard, require all passengers to have travel insurance; otherwise, boarding may be denied.

Cunard’s website states that it is compulsory for all UK guests to have suitable travel insurance to cruise with them. The company underscores the importance of insurance in ensuring travelers feel secure in case of unforeseen circumstances before or during their trip.

Passengers must confirm they have insurance before boarding, as failure to do so may result in denial of boarding at their expense. It is advisable to verify each cruise line’s insurance requirements directly before embarking, as policies vary among companies.

Post Office Travel Insurance has outlined five key risks travelers should be mindful of when embarking on a cruise and why having travel insurance is critical. The risks include potential financial losses from missed excursions, illness onboard, inability to participate in prepaid activities, unexpected route changes, and expensive healthcare costs.

Adam Edinburgh, Head of Post Office Travel & New Products, emphasized the importance of cruise travel insurance in ensuring memorable and trouble-free trips for modern travelers. The Mirror has reached out to Cunard for comment on the matter.
