Labour mayors stand with Minneapolis mayor after controversial ICE shooting

Date:

Labour’s metropolitan mayors showed their solidarity with the Minneapolis mayor following the controversial ICE shooting that has incited outrage in the city.

Mayor Jacob Frey gained attention for his prompt reaction to the incident involving Renee Good, where he directed expletives towards ICE and demanded their departure from Minnesota.

A newly released video captured the event from the ICE agent’s perspective, revealing that Good, a mother of three, was attempting to steer away from the agent when he fired three shots at her, accompanied by derogatory language.

Contrary to claims made by Donald Trump and JD Vance, the footage contradicts the narrative that Good was intentionally trying to harm the agent, leading to doubts about the self-defense argument.

In a joint statement, Labour’s metropolitan mayors commended Mayor Frey and other U.S. mayors for their compassionate and evidence-based leadership in the face of tragedy, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights.

Signatories to the statement include prominent mayors such as Sadiq Khan of London, Andy Burnham of Manchester, and Steve Rotheram of Liverpool, among others.

Protesters gathered outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to house ICE agents, disrupting their rest in response to the shooting incident.

Despite assertions by JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin that the video supports the self-defense claim, Mayor Frey dismissed such arguments as baseless.

Law enforcement experts noted that while the video did not alter their views on the use of force, it raised concerns about the officer’s training, particularly his actions of holding a gun and a cellphone simultaneously during the incident.

Analysis of the video suggested that the officers did not perceive Good as a threat, with experts questioning the officer’s conduct based on the circumstances captured.

The ICE agent involved, Ross, a 43-year-old veteran with a background in the Border Patrol and ICE, had previously been injured in a similar incident last year.
