Snooker Icon John Virgo Dies at 79

Date:

Snooker legend John Virgo’s unexpected death at the age of 79 has been attributed to a ruptured aorta, as confirmed by a source close to the family. Known for his achievements in the 1970s and 1980s, including winning the 1979 UK Championship and reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship in the same year, Virgo gained widespread recognition in the 1990s for co-hosting the popular TV show Big Break alongside comedian Jim Davidson.

Renowned as the ‘voice of snooker,’ Virgo had a successful commentary career with the BBC, where his iconic catchphrase “where’s the cue ball going?” became synonymous with his broadcasts. Virgo, who resided in Spain with his wife Rosie, was mourned by his family and friends, including his wife who expressed deep sorrow over his sudden passing just days before their 16th wedding anniversary.

Among those paying tribute to Virgo were his close friend James Malyon and fellow snooker champions Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry, who fondly remembered their time spent with Virgo both on and off the snooker table. Davidson, who worked closely with Virgo on Big Break, also honored his late friend, praising Virgo’s talent and character that brought joy to many.

In 2020, Virgo and his wife relocated to Spain in the hopes of alleviating his long-standing neck injury, seeking comfort in the warmer climate of Costa del Sol. Survived by his son Gary and daughter Brook-Leah from previous marriages, Virgo leaves behind a legacy of excellence and camaraderie cherished by the snooker community and beyond.
