An urgent warning has been issued for individuals using Android or iPhone devices regarding the dangers of using unofficial charging accessories. With new devices often excluding chargers, consumers are left to purchase separate adapters, which can cost at least £20 from official retailers. This has led many to seek cheaper alternatives online, where unofficial chargers are available for under £8, significantly less than branded options from companies like Apple and Samsung. However, consumer advocacy group Which? has raised red flags about the safety of these budget chargers.
In a recent investigation, Which? procured various chargers from online platforms such as Amazon, AliExpress, B&Q Marketplace, Debenhams Marketplace, and eBay. Shockingly, the tests conducted revealed that nine of the chargers posed a risk of electric shock due to subpar manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire hazards.
Of particular concern was a counterfeit charger designed to resemble Apple’s USB-C 35W Power Adapter, priced at £11.99. Despite the packaging displaying Apple branding, the charger failed safety standards when tested by Which?. Additionally, some chargers lacked essential UK safety markings and featured hazardous internal circuitry, increasing the likelihood of overheating, fires, or explosions.
This isn’t the first time that Which? has highlighted the dangers of unsafe electrical products being sold online. Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences poorly designed electrical items can have and urged the government to enforce stricter product safety laws for online marketplaces.
Responding to these concerns, Amazon reiterated its commitment to customer safety and mentioned its collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote secure charging practices. The company assured that all products on its platform adhere to relevant laws and regulations, and any flagged chargers have been removed. B&Q also emphasized its dedication to product safety and confirmed proactive measures to prevent the sale of recalled items on its Marketplace.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers only from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks. Although these options may be pricier initially, experts caution that the potential hazards associated with cheaper alternatives far outweigh any cost savings.
