Former England Cricketer Tony Pigott Dies at 67

Date:

Former England cricketer Tony Pigott passed away at 67 after a heart attack. Pigott, a renowned seam bowler who claimed over 1,000 wickets in his career, had battled oesophageal cancer previously.

In a memorable moment in 1984, Pigott received a surprise call-up to play for England against New Zealand, coinciding with his scheduled wedding. Opting to prioritize his country, he postponed the wedding and traveled to New Zealand, where he managed to take two wickets.

Although his England debut didn’t go as hoped, with the team suffering a significant defeat, Pigott’s cricket career was distinguished by his contributions at the county level. He spent 18 years with Sussex before joining Surrey in 1994 due to injury struggles, eventually returning to Sussex in 1997.

Pigott later became the CEO of Sussex after overseeing a successful takeover and played a key role in the club’s achievement of their first County Championship title in 2003. He was instrumental in introducing floodlights at Hove, marking a milestone for cricket grounds in the UK.

Following his passing, tributes poured in for Pigott, with former Sussex captain Chris Adams praising him as a transformative figure for the club. Adams highlighted Pigott’s positive influence and recalled how Pigott played a significant role in his own career decisions.

Ian Gould, a former Sussex wicket-keeper and umpire, also expressed sadness over Pigott’s death, describing him as a remarkable character. The cricket community mourns the loss of Pigott, remembering him for his contributions on and off the field.
