A killer responded casually to inquiries about a foul odor emanating from his residence where he was cooking one of his victim’s heads on the stove.
Gary Heidnik, likened to the infamous character ‘Buffalo Bill’ Gumb from Silence of the Lambs, imprisoned six women in a pit he had dug in his basement. He subjected them to repeated physical and sexual assaults before murdering two of them.
Neighbors noticed a noxious smell coming from Heidnik’s home but were dismissed when they raised concerns. Even when a police officer visited and detected the strong odor, Heidnik nonchalantly explained it away as burnt food.
Heidnik’s heinous crimes were unveiled when one of his captives managed to escape and alerted the authorities. Upon entering his dwelling, the police discovered a horrifying scene with three women still chained in a pit, while two others had been killed by electrocution and starvation.
The reign of terror orchestrated by Heidnik could have been halted sooner, as suspicions were raised by someone who attended his church about a woman being held captive in his basement. Unfortunately, the claim was disregarded as implausible.
Beginning in November 1986, Heidnik abducted his first known victim, leading to a series of further abductions and brutal treatment of young women. Reports indicate that Heidnik abused and starved his victims, forcing them to endure inhumane conditions.
To discipline his captives, Heidnik resorted to extreme measures such as hanging victims for days and orchestrating deadly punishments. The gruesome details of his actions were uncovered when a brave victim managed to escape and alert the authorities.
Following his capture, Heidnik was found guilty of multiple heinous crimes, including murder, kidnapping, and rape. Despite attempts to prove his insanity, his amassed wealth through financial investments worked against this defense. He was eventually sentenced to death and executed in 1999.
Heidnik’s case remains a chilling reminder of the horrors he inflicted on his victims and the brutal end he met at the hands of the law.
