Reform UK’s primary local governing body is under scrutiny for allegedly going back on its electoral commitments by suggesting a nearly 4% increase in council tax.
Kent County Council, which was won by Nigel Farage’s party in the local elections of May 2025, had pledged to showcase the potential of a Reform government at Downing Street. However, recent budget drafts from KCC propose a 3.99% council tax hike, contradicting their previous promise to reduce taxes.
Although the proposed increase falls below the maximum 5% limit that councils can impose without a local referendum or central government approval, Reform candidates had campaigned on platforms like “Reduce waste and cut your taxes” before the elections.
The Liberal Democrat opposition at KCC has accused Reform of financial mismanagement and labeled their actions as a complete betrayal of their electoral assurances. Leader Antony Hook criticized Reform for breaking their promise to make savings and ease the tax burden on taxpayers.
Recently, the Reform-led Staffordshire council also suggested a 3.99% hike in residents’ bills for the upcoming financial year 2026-2027.
Responding to the criticism, Kent County Council leader Linden Kemkaran explained that the council faced significant financial challenges upon taking office, including a substantial debt and growing pressures on essential services. She highlighted that the proposed council tax increase for 2026 was kept below anticipated levels due to prudent financial management and efficiencies.
In the past year, four Reform UK councillors were suspended after a leaked video revealed a tumultuous council meeting. Council leader Ms. Kemkaran was heard emphasizing the importance of making tough decisions, despite not being universally popular among council members.
The final decision on KCC’s budget and council tax charge is scheduled for February 12.
