After informing a grieving family that their teenage son had passed away in a tragic car accident just before Christmas, authorities were shocked to discover that he had actually survived and emerged from a coma.
South Yorkshire Police disclosed that Trevor Wynn, aged 17, was declared deceased around 3 am on December 13 after a silver Toyota Corolla veered off the road. The family received a devastating blow when Trevor, whom they believed to be deceased, regained consciousness in a hospital bed weeks later and identified himself to medical staff.
Tragically, 18-year-old Joshua Johnson lost his life in the crash, while law enforcement mistakenly thought he was the individual under medical care. Additionally, 17-year-old Summer Louise Scott, the driver during the incident, also tragically lost her life.
The Wynn family had been preparing for Trevor’s funeral over the Christmas period, scheduling it for the upcoming Friday, until the astonishing revelation of the mix-up came to light.
An 18-year-old suspect was apprehended on suspicion of causing death due to dangerous driving, and a 19-year-old was taken into custody on suspicion of obstructing justice. Both individuals are currently on bail as authorities continue their investigations.
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane stated, “We have opted to report ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to review our involvement in the identification procedures that were followed following the vehicular incident.”
Initially informed that Trevor was one of two fatalities in a car crash on December 13 around 3 am, his family was shocked to learn that he had survived the collision and had been comatose in the hospital for three weeks.
It wasn’t until 22 days after the accident that Trevor’s family discovered he was alive, having spent the Christmas holiday planning his funeral under erroneous information.
While authorities believed that Joshua Johnson (depicted) was recuperating in the hospital, the reality was that the 18-year-old had tragically passed away on the day of the accident.
The Wynn family shared this incredible turn of events on a GoFundMe page that had been created when they believed Trevor had perished.
Joshua Johnson’s family was under the impression that their son was alive and fighting for his life in the hospital over Christmas, only to later learn of his demise following the collision.
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane of South Yorkshire Police expressed that his department acknowledges “the additional trauma this may cause” in light of the situation.
The incident occurred on Todwick Road, near Dinnington, in South Yorkshire, where the vehicle left the roadway.
