“Landfill Collapse Traps Dozens in Philippines”

Date:

Dozens of individuals are feared trapped under debris following a landfill collapse incident. A significant rescue operation is currently in progress in central Philippines to locate those affected, with one casualty confirmed so far. Nearly 50 sanitation workers were caught in the collapse at the Binaliw Landfill in Cebu City, a privately operated site.

Emergency services successfully rescued 13 individuals overnight, but many are still missing under the rubble of garbage and debris. Among the affected are landfill workers, although it remains uncertain if any nearby residents were involved. Unfortunately, one female worker passed away while being transported to a hospital, while the rest sustained injuries and were hospitalized.

Jaylord Antigua, an office employee at the landfill, described the sudden collapse of the garbage heap without warning during favorable weather conditions. He managed to free himself from the destruction with minor injuries by navigating through the rubble.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing to find the 38 missing persons, as confirmed by Cebu Mayor Nestor Archival and the Office of Civil Defence. The city government assures the affected families of its commitment to safety and transparency throughout the rescue operations.

Images released by authorities depict rescue teams using heavy machinery to clear the debris in the devastated area. Desperate relatives anxiously await news as the search continues. A woman pleaded for expedited efforts to locate missing individuals.

An emergency meeting is scheduled for waste management facility officials and authorities to address the incident. The collapse affected a warehouse where waste separation activities took place, with uncertainties about potential impact on nearby structures.

Landfills and dumpsites have posed ongoing safety and health risks in various Philippine regions, particularly in close proximity to impoverished communities reliant on scavenging in garbage piles. Past incidents, such as the 2000 disaster in Quezon City, emphasize the importance of proper waste management and closure of illegal dumpsites to prevent tragedies and promote public safety.
