Many individuals in Wales are experiencing ongoing challenges that make life more difficult than it should be.
The reality is that despite hard work, concerns about financial stability persist, with town centers facing closures and fears about the future job market for Welsh residents. Acknowledging this truth is essential, and as the First Minister, I am committed to addressing these issues openly.
Following a period of austerity and budget cuts under the Tory government, substantial investments have been made in public services. While efforts have been made to safeguard essential services, progress may not be perceived as rapid enough for numerous families. Hence, continuous efforts are required to assure families that their loyalty will yield tangible benefits.
Wales is on the brink of a new era, transitioning from merely managing imposed Tory cuts to shaping its future destiny. The groundwork laid over 25 years of devolution, focusing on enhancing skills, infrastructure, and confidence, is starting to bear fruit.
The region is now attracting investors who were previously looking elsewhere, setting the stage for a surge in job opportunities across different sectors in Wales. The key drivers of this investment include stability, infrastructure development, and prioritizing the well-being of the community, elements that are central to my government’s agenda.
The impact of these efforts is already visible, with major energy projects in the north, an AI growth zone in the south, advanced manufacturing in the east, and renewable energy initiatives along the western coast. Since assuming office as the First Minister, we have secured £16 billion in business funding, with the commitment to host a highly successful Wales Investment Summit. These investments translate into tangible outcomes such as job creation, apprenticeships, and fresh opportunities within Welsh neighborhoods, breathing new life and optimism into local communities.
However, economic growth alone is insufficient; it must be accompanied by fairness. A fair future entails access to healthcare, localized care services, reduced waiting times, enhanced safety measures, visible law enforcement, educational and employment opportunities for young people, vibrant town centers, and the preservation and promotion of Welsh culture and language.
The upcoming election in Wales presents a distinct choice. While some parties advocate for “change,” they fail to provide a detailed governance plan or funding strategy. On the other hand, parties like Reform promote discontent, advocating for cuts and chaos that could jeopardize essential services.
While acknowledging existing injustices, Welsh Labour is focused on actions rather than rhetoric, contrasting with Reform’s approach of assigning blame without proposing viable solutions. Welsh Labour’s strategy, including policies like free prescriptions, universal free school meals for primary students, ensuring the Real Living Wage for care workers, and nationalizing railways, reflects a commitment to making significant political decisions that benefit the populace.
This election is not just about endorsing change or maintaining the status quo; it is about sustaining progress after overcoming a period of austerity and uncertainty or risking the progress made thus far. With a new cadre of candidates and a clear vision, Welsh Labour is poised to lead the way in shaping a fair and promising future for Wales, collectively.
