A tragic incident unfolded in Minneapolis as a woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during an immigration enforcement operation. The city’s Mayor, Jacob Frey, criticized the agency for the chaos it brought to the streets.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson claimed that the ICE officer acted in self-defence, alleging that the victim was attempting to run over federal officers. However, Mayor Frey disputed this account, citing video evidence showing the officer firing shots at the woman’s vehicle as it tried to drive away.
The shooting took place at East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, leading to protests at the scene where demonstrators expressed anger towards the presence of federal immigration enforcement agents. Mayor Frey demanded that ICE leave the city immediately, emphasizing solidarity with immigrant and refugee communities.
During a press conference, Mayor Frey condemned ICE, urging them to leave Minneapolis and promising a thorough investigation into the incident. He criticized the agency for causing chaos and distrust in the city, stating that their actions were tearing families apart and leading to tragic outcomes.
The DHS Secretary described the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism,” claiming that the ICE officers were attacked by the victim while trying to navigate adverse weather conditions. Mayor Frey rejected this narrative, maintaining that the shooting was a result of reckless behavior by the officer.
The incident added to tensions in Minneapolis and St. Paul following a crackdown on alleged fraud involving Somali residents. Over 2,000 ICE agents were deployed to Minnesota for what was described as the agency’s largest immigration operation. The shooting location was near immigrant markets and close to where George Floyd was killed in 2020.
