The television market in the UK is traditionally dominated by Sky and Freeview, but a new player, Freely, has emerged as a strong contender since its introduction in 2024. With over one million households already using the service, Freely has been gaining momentum.
Freely has been enhancing its features and expanding its content offerings, now boasting over 50 live channels accessible without the need for an aerial or satellite dish. The latest development from Freely is the introduction of Freely Spotlight Channels, which provide additional entertainment options at no extra cost. These channels can be streamed solely through a standard Wi-Fi connection.
The Freely Spotlight Channels will be located on channel 31, as well as channels 90 to 99, and will be accessible to CTV OS partners on Freely-enabled devices. V, previously known as VIDAA, the company behind the VIDAA OS smart TV platform found in Hisense TVs, will be the first launch partner to offer a curated selection of channels through the Freely TV Guide.
These new channels will complement existing UK broadcasters in the TV guide, offering selected channels increased visibility and credibility within the regulated TV landscape of the UK. While specific content details are yet to be revealed, more information is expected to be disclosed closer to the launch date.
According to Deep Halder, Chief Commercial Officer at Everyone TV, the focus is on creating long-term value for all stakeholders as Freely expands. By allowing CTV OS partners to feature in specific sections of the TV guide, Freely aims to generate new opportunities while ensuring that free, reliable TV content remains easily accessible to UK audiences in the digital streaming era.
For those unfamiliar with Freely, it is operated by the same team responsible for Freeview and Freesat, offering a broadband-based content delivery system that eliminates the need for traditional antennas or satellite dishes. To access Freely, households only require a compatible TV or set-top box and a stable Wi-Fi connection.
The platform currently provides access to over 50 live channels, on-demand content, personalized recommendations, a comprehensive TV guide, and the ability to pause live TV, making it a convenient and versatile option for viewers.
