A significant union in the Yukon was recently placed under trusteeship, prompting a virtual town hall organized by its parent union to address members’ concerns. The newly appointed trustee, Josée-Anne Spirito, and administrator, Chris Aylward, both hail from the Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU) parent organization, the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
The decision to assume control of the YEU was made by the Public Service Alliance, suspending the Yukon union’s bylaws and displacing its top leadership. Spirito emphasized that the trusteeship was not a result of financial issues or wrongdoing but aimed at ensuring compliance with the union’s regulations.
Aylward, whose salary is funded by YEU, expressed challenges faced during his tenure as administrator, citing obstacles hindering progress and a lack of cooperation from executive members. He highlighted the need for the trusteeship to revamp the YEU amid existing dysfunction.
While some members questioned the necessity of the trusteeship, citing concerns over transparency, Spirito reiterated the importance of ensuring proper representation and democratic processes within the union. She pledged to engage members through town hall meetings to address queries and provide updates on corrective actions.
Despite the ongoing trusteeship, Spirito assured members that bargaining efforts would continue without disruption, prioritizing securing favorable deals for YEU members at the negotiation table. The focus remains on upholding the union’s interests and advancing negotiations positively.
