Numerous schools are set to shut down on Friday due to an incoming heavy snowfall expected overnight. Schools in various regions like the Midlands and Wales have decided to close following an amber warning for snow, effective from 8pm today until 9am tomorrow. Over two dozen schools in Shropshire are included in the closures due to the impact of Storm Goretti, which has already hit the UK with heavy snow and strong winds reaching up to 99mph, resulting in power outages in south-west England.
The Met Office has issued an amber alert stating that the rain associated with the storm will transform into heavy snow, posing the risk of power disruptions and potentially isolating rural communities. Snow accumulation of 10 to 15cm is anticipated in the affected areas, with higher ground areas in Wales and the Peak District expecting up to 30cm of snow.
In addition, a yellow snow warning extending until midday tomorrow covers similar regions along with parts of northern and southern England, including London. Northern and eastern Scotland, along with northern England, are under a second yellow warning for snow and ice, also in effect until midday tomorrow. In Scotland, more than 250 schools will remain closed, including significant closures in Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, Aberdeen, and Moray.
Furthermore, strong winds have compelled numerous schools across Cornwall to close early today. The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for Cornwall, including the Isles of Scilly, with wind speeds recorded at 99mph at St Mary’s Airport, setting a new record for the location.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong has cautioned about the possibility of “violent gusts” persisting for several hours before easing. He emphasized the severe impact of Storm Goretti, which is expected to bring heavy snow to Wales, the Midlands, and parts of northern England. Armstrong advised residents in the warning areas to stay informed about the forecast and heed guidance from local authorities to mitigate disruptions.
