In the wake of a tragic incident where an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis, the US government quietly implemented a new policy aimed at safeguarding ICE operations. The shooting, which sparked outrage nationwide and globally, led to the Trump administration defending the agent’s actions and labeling Good as a “domestic terrorist.”
While publicly criticizing the victim and protestors, the White House discreetly introduced a significant change to enhance ICE security measures. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced a new regulation requiring lawmakers to provide a week’s notice before visiting ICE facilities, effectively limiting impromptu congressional visits.
This policy, unveiled just hours after Good’s death but made public later, imposes a seven-day advance notification requirement for congressional visits to ICE detention centers. The restriction came to light after three House Democrats, Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig, and Kelly Morrison, were denied access to an ICE facility in Minnesota, unaware of the new order before attempting entry.
Omar emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that the public deserves to be informed about ICE facility activities. In response, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson accused the Congress members of inciting protestors to target ICE officers and violating existing regulations mandating a seven-day notice for visits.
The development follows the release of bodycam footage from the incident, providing additional insight into the shooting. Contrary to claims by Trump and other politicians, the video raised questions about the circumstances leading to Good’s death. The footage captured Good’s calm demeanor towards the officer before the fatal shooting, while the agent’s aggressive language post-shooting was also captured.
