“Unveiling Asma al-Assad: Syria’s Controversial First Lady”

Date:

The end of Bashar al-Assad’s rule in Syria in December 2024 marked the abrupt conclusion of a long-standing family reign over the nation. The downfall of his administration triggered a fresh wave of investigations into the Assad family, with a particular focus on Asma al-Assad, Bashar’s wife.

Originating as Emma Akhras, a British investment banker from West London, Asma transitioned into Syria’s first lady. Initially portrayed as a modernizing influence and likened to “a rose in the desert” by Vogue, she later emerged as a contentious figure within Assad’s oppressive regime.

Chloe Hadjimatheou, The Observer’s narrative editor and host of the podcast ‘We Call Her Emma,’ engages with guest host Jason Markusoff in a discussion about the evolution of Syria’s former first lady and her involvement in her husband’s governance.
