“UK Warns of Russian Disinformation Threat to Children”

Children are at risk of falling prey to Russian disinformation due to a decline in reading habits, cautioned Bridget Phillipson. The Education Secretary expressed concern that the diminishing interest in reading among young individuals could jeopardize national security, especially as malicious entities are leveraging social media with increasing sophistication.

Phillipson emphasized the necessity for the UK to nurture a generation of critical thinkers, as foreign state actors are masquerading as legitimate news sources to disseminate disinformation online. She highlighted the escalating threat posed by Russia and other hostile forces, citing the growing complexity of disinformation campaigns on social platforms and the broader internet.

In an article for the Telegraph, Phillipson underscored the importance of combating the spread of misinformation by fostering individuals who can discern truth from falsehood and resist the allure of deceptive online content. She stressed the need for a populace equipped to analyze information critically and uphold the value of truth in the face of online manipulation.

To address these challenges, Phillipson’s Department for Education has collaborated with the National Literacy Trust to launch a nationwide campaign aiming to designate 2026 as the national year of reading. The initiative seeks to reverse the decline in reading rates, which have plummeted from nearly half of children enjoying reading two decades ago to just a third today.

Despite the government’s efforts to bolster literacy, Phillipson has encountered opposition from teaching unions, including the National Education Union (NEU), regarding her proposal to introduce a new Year 8 reading test. The UK is confronting a deluge of disinformation and propaganda aimed at undermining societal stability and trust in governmental institutions, as emphasized by the latest MI6 chief Blaise Metreweli, who highlighted the omnipresence of threats and the imperative for enhanced technological fluency among intelligence operatives.
