A significant snowstorm is forecasted to hit various parts of the UK, potentially dumping up to 20 inches of snow in some regions, amidst blizzard conditions sweeping across Europe.
According to the ECMWF weather model, extensive snowfall is expected across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland by January 11. The projections indicate that by 6 am, the snow will shift towards the southeast of England, particularly affecting London and Kent.
Although snowfall rates could reach 4cm per hour in certain areas, the snow is anticipated to mainly settle in the far eastern parts of England. This additional snowfall will contribute to existing accumulations, possibly reaching depths of 20 inches in specific locations following the blizzards.
Areas like the Pennines and Snowdonia in the UK might witness around 12cm (4.7 inches) of snow by midday, with Scotland expected to experience the deepest snow drifts, potentially up to 50cm (19.6 inches) along the west coast.
Similarly, significant snowfall is predicted across swathes of Europe, including northern France and parts of Belgium expecting up to 50cm of snow. The Norwegian coast’s rugged fjords, especially areas near Stavanger, could see up to six feet of snow during the same period.
As the cold spell approaches, the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) has raised amber warnings for all of England due to potential disruptions in health and social care services.
The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings for snow and ice until Sunday, covering at least 79 locations. Temperatures are expected to plummet to -12C over the weekend, with scattered wintry showers anticipated in various regions.
Looking ahead, New Year’s Day is projected to be cold and windy, particularly in the northern and eastern regions, with wintry showers likely in northern Scotland and western coastlines, while other areas should remain dry with sunny intervals.
